Cross Canada Trip, Day 5

Regina to Calgary

Finally, our last day of driving!  There was a bit of concern about the snow storm heading our way from Calgary. We had been keeping a close eye on the weather all week, which for the most part we seemed to have planned our trip very well. But we had enough money left over just in case we needed to cut our driving short and spend one more night at a hotel.

The scenery was pretty similar, plenty of wide open farm land for as far as the eye could see. As we got closer to Alberta,we started to see drills digging for oil as well as a few deer and bison sightings.

The deer I was seeing plenty of back home, but oil drills and bison aren’t seen in the Western Mass area.

As we got closer to Calgary there was a lot more snow on the ground, and apparently we had arrived on the coldest day of the year. This cold snap lasted for the next few days. I suppose that would only be fair since the first time James came down to the US to visit me (Late June 2007) he arrived on the hottest day of the year.

We arrive at the house that we are staying at temporarily, and see that Calgary does a crappy job of plowing the side streets. Sure the main roads were better, and it was brought to my attention that the city doesn’t use road salt, just sand. I would have thought differently… So we had an eventful time trying to find a place to park, a place my car won’t get plowed in, a place it won’t get stuck.

After almost 3 years, I finally meet my sister in law. She was kind enough to have dinner ready and even helped bring our bags inside. After being outside in the below freezing cold for a few minute, I started to lose feeling in my finger tips. I made one trip into the house and before I went back out, I was trying to get my gloves on…. A little too late, as I couldn’t feel my fingers in the gloves and they are hard to put on when you can’t feel where your fingers are, I wish I were exaggerating.  *makes a mental note to self, always keep gloves with in reach* After 15-20 minutes later I regained the feeling back in my fingers.

Needless to say, we made it to Calgary in 5 days all safe and sound.

Here are a few stats from this trip:

The day started at 9:30am, 8 hours of driving, we went from 2,581 feet in elevation to 3,130 feet, deer and bison sightings, a total of 2,570 miles driven over 5 days.
